Course Overview

The Step8Up Web Developer Skills Bootcamp is a Level 4 accredited, government-funded, 12-week intensive program crafted to propel careers in the tech industry. It’s designed for career changers, those with career gaps, unemployed individuals, team members in tech-oriented companies and those looking to enhance their digital skills and confidence to secure or advance in employment.

The bootcamp aims to equip participants with the skills needed for the digital age, supporting their progression into further learning, employment, and community involvement, while also fostering local job creation.

Participants gain job-readiness through practical projects, live guided sessions, and achieve BCS accreditation. The program includes comprehensive job placement support, featuring mock interviews, CV preparation, and soft skills coaching. Upon successful completion, every participant is offered an interview with an employer, providing a direct pathway to employment.
Employers also benefit by being able to upskill their teams with significant government-backed discounts and gaining early access to a pipeline of vetted, job-ready candidates without recruitment fees.

Prerequisite

  • Age

    Be aged 19 or over on August 31, 2024, for bootcamps starting between April 1, 2025, and July 31, 2025, or on August 31, 2025, for bootcamps starting between August 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.

  • Residency

    You must possess the right to work in the UK and have been a resident for a minimum of 3 years. While the program primarily targets residents of England, applicants from outside Hampshire within England may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Employment status

    The bootcamp is open to individuals who are currently employed, self-employed, unemployed, or returning to the workforce after a break. This does not affect any Universal Credit.

  • Technical requirements

    Candidates should have basic programming experience and access to a personal laptop with working webcam and mic (preferably less than 3 years old). Chromebooks, iPads or Tablets are unsuitable. There is an online assessment in the steps to apply followed by a short interview.

Attendance on all days is mandatory. You should also set aside additional time each week for personal practice and study.

Apply early by completing the enrolment form here (also at the top of this page) and meeting eligibility and commitment requirements. Spaces are limited and the course will stop after the gov funding has been utilised.

In order to complete your application process, start your learning and gain your certificate you will go through the steps listed below:

  1. Candidate Application Form: Complete the enrolment form to show your interest in the skills bootcamp. As part of this you will also need to agree to the terms and conditions of your course.
  2. Initial Diagnostic Assessment: As part of the enrolment process, you will be required to complete a range initial assessment questions on your technical skills. This is a simple quiz to ensure that you have some background in technology. Your response will then be assessed by our team to confirm your eligibility and suitability for your chosen course.
  3. Information, Advice and Guidance email/call: We will go through your Application and Initial Assessment with you to check that you are happy with the commitment to your course.
  4. Enrolment onto course: Once you have accepted the T&Cs we will allocate you to a cohort and enrol you onto your course.
  5. Create a LMS account & login: Now you’re enrolled, you will receive an email with your account login details for our learning platform, where you will access your learning material and live learning sessions. You will get access to this platform 1 week prior to the course.
  6. Learning Starting Point Assessment: You will be sent a form to an online ‘Learning Starting Point Assessment’ and ‘Welcome to your Skills Bootcamp Course’.  You will be required to complete both courses within 48 hours of enrolment.
  7. Start your learning: Every week you will complete your learning including 8 hours of live sessions with your Tutor and our careers team. You will also complete assessments and projects on our LMS platform. You are expected to complete all the quizzes and assignments every week.
  8. Careers and Support: You will continue to be supported by our Careers and Progressions team to help you find a new job, gain promotion or grow your business for up to six months after you complete your course.
  9. Job interview and placement support: If you are unemployed or looking to change careers you will be offered a job interview through our partners. The job search process is supported – the job applications are done by the candidates and supported by us. We do not place candidates and the discussions between potential employers and candidates are directly between them.
  10. Progression: You will need to provide us with written evidence of your progression once you have secured a new job, gained a promotion or secured new business.
  11. End of Course Assessment: To understand your final progress.

We use Moodle. It is an online system where you access materials, live sessions (via Zoom), assignments, and assessments.

Yes, you will receive a BCS (British Computer Society) Accredited certificate upon completing the Skills Bootcamp. It is at UK Level 4.

Only one per funding year. If you have joined a skills bootcamp in the current financial year, you may not be eligible.

While this course costs many thousands of GBP in the private sector, if you meet the residency eligibility, the course is fully funded (free) if you’re unemployed, employed but changing careers, or an employer sponsoring their team member, with the following conditions:

  • Large employers receive 70% funding support.

  • Small businesses benefit from 90% funding.

  • Solopreneurs get 100% funding to boost their skills and grow their earnings.

 

As a student, you are expected to:

  • Actively participate and engage in all live sessions and activities.

  • Interact respectfully with trainers and fellow students to maximise your learning experience.

  • Complete all project work, assignments, and assessments on time, taking your learning through to full completion.

  • Prepare your CV and apply actively for jobs during and after the course.

  • Keep us updated on your job applications, interviews, and progress regularly.
